Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about planning a meaningful celebration of life.

Getting Started
What is the difference between a funeral, memorial service, and celebration of life?

While these terms are often used interchangeably, they have important differences. A traditional funeral typically follows a more formal structure and often includes the presence of the deceased before burial or cremation. A memorial service generally takes place after burial or cremation and offers more flexibility. A celebration of life focuses on honoring your loved one’s unique personality, passions, and legacy through a meaningful, personalized gathering. At Lighten, we specialize in creating celebrations that reflect a life well lived.

How do I know which type of gathering is right for my family?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Every family, every relationship, and every life is unique. During our planning process, we’ll help you explore your options and design a gathering that feels authentic to your loved one and meaningful for everyone attending.

I don’t know where to begin. Can Lighten help?

Absolutely. Most families come to us feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start. We’ll guide you through every step—from developing the vision for the celebration to coordinating the details—so you can focus on your family while we handle the planning.

Can you help if the death has already occurred?

Yes. Most of the families we work with contact us after a loved one has passed away. Whether you’re planning a gathering in a few days or several weeks from now, we’ll work with your timeline to create a meaningful celebration.

How quickly can we plan a celebration of life?

Our standard planning timeline is approximately four weeks, allowing time to thoughtfully design every aspect of the celebration. If you’re working within a shorter timeframe, we’ll do everything possible to accommodate your schedule.

Planning With Lighten
What is included in Celebration of Life Planning?

Our Celebration of Life Planning package includes personalized ceremony design, dedicated planning support, guest management, a memorial website with RSVP capabilities, a personalized photo montage, planning sessions, and ongoing guidance throughout the process. Optional enhancements such as livestreaming, officiants, venue sourcing, and day-of coordination are also available.

Can you help with only part of the planning?

Yes. While many families choose our full planning package, we’re also happy to help with specific aspects of a celebration. Whether you need professional livestreaming, an officiant, eulogy writing, or another individual service, we’ll work with you to determine the best solution.

Can we personalize every aspect of the celebration?

Absolutely. Personalization is at the heart of everything we do. We don’t believe in cookie-cutter ceremonies. Every celebration is designed around your loved one’s story, personality, traditions, passions, and values.

Can Lighten work with our existing funeral home or venue?

Yes. We frequently collaborate with funeral homes, cemeteries, cremation providers, churches, event venues, and other professionals. Lighten complements the services they provide by designing and coordinating a personalized celebration of life.

Can you help us find a venue?

Yes. Whether you’re envisioning a traditional gathering or something more unique, we can help identify a venue that fits your guest count, budget, and your loved one’s personality.

Can you coordinate vendors like florists, musicians, photographers, or caterers?

Yes. We can coordinate a wide variety of vendors, including florists, musicians, officiants, photographers, videographers, caterers, rental companies, décor specialists, and more, helping create a seamless experience for your family.

Virtual & Hybrid Gatherings
Can family and friends attend virtually?

Absolutely. We can help include loved ones who are unable to travel through professional virtual participation or livestreaming options, allowing everyone to be part of the celebration regardless of location.

Do you offer fully virtual memorials?

Yes. Our Virtual Memorial service provides a professionally facilitated online gathering complete with ceremony planning, guest management, technology support, personalized content, and a recording to preserve the experience.

Can you livestream an in-person celebration?

Yes. Professional livestreaming is available as an enhancement to many in-person celebrations, allowing remote family and friends to participate live.

Will we receive a recording afterward?

Yes. Both Virtual Memorials and professionally livestreamed celebrations can be recorded so you can revisit the ceremony and share it with loved ones who couldn’t attend.

Ceremony & Personalization
Can our celebration be religious, spiritual, secular, or culturally specific?

Absolutely. We work with families of all faiths, cultures, traditions, and beliefs. Whether your ceremony is deeply religious, completely secular, or blends multiple traditions, we’ll help create a gathering that feels authentic to your family.

Can you help write a eulogy or organize speakers?

Yes. We can help organize the ceremony, coordinate speakers, and even assist with writing or refining a personalized eulogy that reflects your loved one’s life and legacy.

Can we include music, videos, photo displays, keepsakes, or special traditions?

Absolutely. Personal touches are what make a celebration truly memorable. We love helping families incorporate favorite music, meaningful videos, photo displays, cultural traditions, keepsakes, hobbies, and unique experiences that reflect the life being celebrated.

Can children participate in the celebration?

Yes. Many families choose to involve children in meaningful and age-appropriate ways, whether through readings, artwork, music, memory sharing, or other special moments. We’ll help you create opportunities that feel comfortable and meaningful for everyone involved.

Can I purchase only one service, such as livestreaming or officiant services?

In many cases, yes. Several of our services are available individually, depending on your needs and location. Contact us to learn more about our à la carte offerings and availability.

How does payment work?

We’ll review pricing with you before work begins and provide a clear agreement outlining the services you’ve selected. Payment schedules vary depending on the scope of your celebration and planning timeline.

Pre-Planning
Can I plan my own celebration of life in advance?

Absolutely. Pre-planning allows you to document your wishes, make thoughtful decisions in advance, and provide clarity and peace of mind for your loved ones when the time comes.

Can my family access my wishes later?

Yes. Your pre-planning information is documented so it can be shared with your family when needed, helping ensure your celebration reflects your wishes while reducing stress during a difficult time.

Working With Lighten
Where does Lighten provide services?

Lighten works with families across the United States. Many planning meetings take place virtually, allowing us to support families regardless of location while coordinating with trusted local venues and service providers.

Do meetings happen in person or virtually?

Most planning meetings are conducted virtually for convenience, though in-person meetings may be available depending on your location and planning needs.

Who will I work with throughout the planning process?

You’ll work with a dedicated Lighten planner who will guide you from your first conversation through the celebration itself, providing personalized support and helping coordinate every detail.

What if my plans change?

We understand that plans often evolve. Whether your guest count changes, you’d like to add services, or your vision develops throughout the planning process, we’ll work with you to adjust the celebration whenever possible.

General
Why choose Lighten instead of planning everything myself?

Planning a meaningful celebration while grieving can be emotionally and logistically overwhelming. Lighten provides the experience, creativity, organization, and support needed to help families focus on remembering and celebrating their loved one instead of managing countless details. We simplify the process while creating a more personalized and meaningful experience.

What makes Lighten different from a traditional funeral home?

Traditional funeral homes primarily focus on funeral arrangements, care of the deceased, burial or cremation, and related logistics. Lighten focuses on designing and coordinating personalized celebrations of life that honor your loved one’s unique story. We often work alongside funeral homes to create experiences that are more personal, memorable, and reflective of the individual being celebrated.
